EXCHANGE GUIDE

Betfair

A plain-English reference for readers in Pakistan who want to understand peer-to-peer betting: how backing and laying work, where commission applies and how the exchange differs from a house-edge product.

Roulette house edge versus exchange commission
WHEEL VERSUS MARKET

Roulette house edge versus exchange commission

A roulette wheel hides its cost inside the payout table. An exchange shows its cost as commission after a market settles. Comparing them is the quickest way to see two different pricing philosophies.

  • Built-in edge
  • Visible commission
  • Fixed payouts
  • Customer prices
THE CONTRAST

One cost is inside the price, one sits beside it

Roulette pays slightly less than the true odds of each bet, and the gap is the house edge, paid on every spin whether you win or lose. On the exchange the price is whatever customers agree, and the operator then takes commission from net winnings in the market. No claim is made here about which roulette games any operator offers; this is a pricing lesson, not a catalogue.

THE WHEEL

Why the payout table always favours the wheel

The edge arises from a simple fact: the payout is calculated as if the wheel had fewer pockets than it really does.

  • Zero pockets

The extra pocket or pockets that belong to neither red nor black are what tilt every ordinary bet towards the operator.

  • Even-money bets

Colour, odd or even and high or low pay evenly, yet lose on the green pocket. That is how an even payout still carries an edge.

  • Single numbers

A straight-up bet pays a large multiple, but the multiple is a little too small for the number of pockets. The edge is the same size as on other bets.

  • Back only

At the wheel you can only choose an outcome to happen. You cannot take the role of the bookmaker, as a layer does on the exchange.

Edge per spin versus commission per market
COST COMPARED

Edge per spin versus commission per market

Illustration with invented numbers: it shows structure, not real rates.

  • A spin repeated

Imagine staking 10 units on each of 100 spins. The edge is charged on all 1,000 units of turnover, however you finish.

  • A market once

Imagine one exchange market with a net win of 20 units. Commission applies to that 20, and nothing applies to a market you end behind.

  • Turnover versus result

A wheel taxes volume; a commission taxes profit. Someone who bets often at a wheel pays more in total than someone who places a few bets.

  • Risk still exists

A lower fee structure does not reduce the chance of losing a bet. A lay on the exchange can cost far more than the backer's stake.

ASKING THE OPERATOR

Rules and fairness questions

Questions about a particular wheel, its rules or its payouts belong with the operator that runs it.

  • Show me the rules

A legitimate roulette product shows its payout table and number of pockets. If it does not, do not play.

  • Contacting Betfair

Customer Services can be reached through Live Messenger, a direct message on the official Facebook page or the BetfairCS Twitter account.

  • Escalation

Customers outside the UK who stay dissatisfied can go to eCOGRA via a deadlock email and can refer gaming complaints to the Malta Gaming Authority.

LIMITS OF THIS PAGE

What the comparison cannot tell you

A clean explanation of pricing is not a recommendation to play.

  • No system works

Doubling after a loss and similar plans change the shape of variance, not the average edge, and they can lead to very large losses.

  • Not a product list

This site does not say that any operator offers roulette to customers in Pakistan.

  • Local law applies

Betfair's terms put the burden on the customer to follow local betting law. Nothing here says online betting is legal in Pakistan.

TERMS

Wheel words and exchange words

A short bilingual list so the two vocabularies stop getting mixed up.

What is the house edge in roulette?

The average percentage of each stake the operator keeps because the payout is lower than the odds of the pocket warrant.

What is exchange commission?

A charge on net winnings in a market. It is not applied to losing bets, per Betfair's help page.

What is turnover?

The total amount staked over a period, counting every bet. The house edge is paid on turnover.

What is a straight-up bet?

A bet on a single number, which pays the largest multiple on the table and still carries the standard edge.

What is variance?

How widely results swing around the average. High variance means large wins and losses even when the edge is small.

ROULETTE QUESTIONS

Roulette and exchange: questions answered

The doubts that come up most when a wheel is compared with a peer-to-peer market.

Does the exchange have roulette?

The exchange is a market for real-world events. Its app description lists sports and politics, not casino wheels.

Which costs less, edge or commission?

It depends how often you bet and how you finish. Edge accrues with every bet; commission appears only when you finish a market with net winnings.

Can I lay a roulette number?

At a wheel you cannot. Laying is an exchange feature where another customer backs the outcome you are betting against.

Is a live-dealer wheel fairer than a virtual one?

Neither removes the edge. Fairness depends on audited rules and a regulated operator, not on the presentation.

Why does this page quote no percentages?

Rates differ by wheel type and by operator, and a figure that is wrong would mislead. Read the rules shown by the operator you use.

Is it safe to chase losses with bigger bets?

No. Raising stakes after a loss increases exposure without changing the edge. Set a limit before you start and keep to it.
